Oklahoma State’s barrage of bad publicity this week may have led to larger-than-usual fan support before a home opener against Lamar.
OSU players and coaches walk down Hester Street on their way to Boone Pickens Stadium for home games. Fans line both sides of the street to cheer for the Cowboys and they came out in full force Saturday, one day after the fourth part of SI's five-part investigative series was published.
“I think (the crowd) was way bigger than normal,” Trent Avery, a 44-year-old fan from Midwest City said.
Why?
“I think it was because of the Sports Illustrated article,” he said.
Avery -- who said he paid $500 for a sprawling Pistol Pete tattoo on his left arm -- indicated that he grew up with OSU head coach Mike Gundy and Gundy’s brother, Cale, a running backs coach at the University of Oklahoma.
Mike Gundy and the Cowboys got the rock star treatment from fans during the walk.
Fans chanted “Gundy, Gundy, Gundy” midway through the trek and the coach acknowledged them with smiles and occasional handshakes. Though a security officer was trailing Gundy (if the security officer wasn’t there, Gundy would perhaps be signing autographs until after kickoff), a young fan wriggled his way to the coach to get a football autographed.
“Go, Gundy,” a fan yelled, pointing in the coach’s direction.
Fans also chanted “orange power” during the player procession, Some players briefly stopped for hugs.
