Jenks guard Jessica Washington said extra free throw practice led to her 21-for-22 performance from the line in Tuesday’s 66-49 win over Union.
The North Carolina signee finished with 38 points as the Trojans avenged two previous losses to the archrival Redskins this season. The most recent came last Saturday when the Redskins prevailed 62-61 in the final of the Jenks/Union Invitational.
Washington said she was disappointed about missing four foul shots in that game, any one of which might have made the difference, and she decided to do something about it.
She waited until after Saturday’s championship boys game was finished, and stayed in Frank Herald Gymnasium until almost midnight, working on her stroke.
She’s done extra free throw work every day since. “We worked out a deal (with head coach Mandy Nightingale) where I have to make 100 free throws before I can go in,” she said.
Jenks struggled offensively Tuesday, missing its first 10 trey attempts and going just 6-for-22 from the field in the first half.
“That’s probably the worst we’ve shot all year,” Nightingale said.
But the Redskins couldn’t handle Washington when she attacked the basket. All they could do was foul, and she made them pay from the line.
Washington’s 38-point total was the second highest of her career. She had 51 in a win at Muskogee on Jan. 4.
