Matt Schilz is a fifth-year senior and team captain, with career totals of 35 starts and more than 7,800 passing yards, but it wasn’t until Tuesday that he was announced as the starting quarterback for Bowling Green’s Thursday, Aug. 29 opener against the University of Tulsa.
Schilz had been competing against sophomore Matt Johnson for the starting assignment.
‘‘Matt earned the job. He had a really good camp,’’ Falcons coach Dave Clawson told the Bowling Green (Ohio) Sentinel-Tribune. ‘‘We feel really good about Matt Johnson, too.
‘‘We hope Matt Schilz has an unbelievable senior year and plays really well. It’s also good for us to know that we have another quarterback who is playing at a real high level.”
Schilz is a 6-foot-2, 209-pound native of Arcadia, Calif. In 2012, he and the Falcons were 8-5. Bowling Green was No. 6 nationally in total defense.
The TU-Bowling Green game begins at 6 p.m. Central and is televised on ESPNU.
