Sometimes, when I went with Mamaw Wright to Jitney Jungle for groceries, I'd sneak peeks at "bad" magazines while standing in line.
"Cover your eyes, Jason," she'd say -- not necessarily serious enough for me to actually do it, but her disdain was obvious for words like "sex" and "breasts," or cover models who showed off the latter, on the glossy fronts of Cosmopolitan magazine.
When she wasn't looking, I'd pluck one off the rack to see what the sex quiz was about. Like I'd know half of what they were saying, but I'd look, nonetheless.
In high school, I'd take those sex quizzes with friends -- totally for laugh's sake.
And I remember, all these years later, one name: Helen Gurley Brown.
Were I pushed to list off magazine editors at gun-point, I'd be able to say her name and Anna Wintour of Vogue. Fascinated as I am by Wintour, I gotta say I'd much rather have a four-cosmo lunch with Ms. Brown. Can you imagine the stories she'd have to tell?
From what I've gathered (assuming what type of research may have gone into her "Sex and the Single Girl"), Ms. Brown came off as a classier version of Belle Watling from "Gone With the Wind."
Rest in peace, Ms. Brown. And thanks for those gloss covers.
Peace, love and four-cosmo lunches ... XOXO
