A reader questioned the use of this downtown Tulsa photo in a rain forecast story posted online today, since it was from Nov. 21, 2011. The fact of the matter is that Tulsa really hasn't had that many significant rain days lately. Hopefully that will change. Tulsa World File

This morning's commute provided gentle rainfall and a reminder that perhaps we'll beat our drought woes still.

So far this month, Tulsa has received 0.84 of an inch of rain, more than all of January. It's not meters of snow (see Jerry's blog entry yesterday here) and it's not as if January isn't the driest month in Tulsa all year (more on that here), but still I'd like to think this is a sign that we are going in the right direction!

I know it's not my traditional gif image day, but here's a look at the Oklahoma Mesonet maps comparing the rainfall statewide during the past month:

The images are from the past day, past three days, past five days, then the past 30 days. If the map is too tiny to see the details:

Blue: Less an 1 inch
Green: 1 to 2 inches
Yellow: 2-3 inches
Orange: 3-4 inches
Shades of red: More than 4 inches

It should come as no surprise that the areas of the state getting nearly 8 inches of rain are drought-free, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor, while areas getting less an inch in the same timeframe are still exceptionally drought-stricken (the most recent drought report is here).

For a look at the rainfall in your area, here's a link to the Oklahoma Mesonet's recent rainfall table.

Or, for a quick reference, here's some of the northeastern Oklahoma totals for the past 7 days and past 30 days (as of Monday, in inches, according to the Oklahoma Mesonet):

City 7 day 30 day
Bixby 0.35 1.17
Bristow 0.21 0.43
Copan 1.461.49
Foraker 2.17 2.18

Here's hoping for even more rain soon!
