Heavy rains soaked Berryhill’s practice field and forced the Chiefs across campus to their track-and-field facility for the start of preseason football drills Monday afternoon.
Berryhill schools opened last Wednesday, and head coach Pat Harper said it’s the first time he can remember being in the classroom before the beginning of football practice.
“It's actually worked out well for us because it gives you three extra days to meet the kids, get physicals and see what you’ve got – instead of just showing up for the first day of football practice,” Harper said.
Harper welcomed 81 athletes in the top four grades, the highest number in his eight years at the helm.
The Chiefs have only 10 seniors, but potential starting quarterback Ty Walker and running back Chad Dillard head a large junior class that has several good athletes, Harper said.
Senior linebackers Jeremy Smith, a University of Tulsa commit, and Lane Hassenplug, who logged 140 tackles last season, are the top returnees from a defense that held seven opponents to 14 points or less last season.
Brett Creekmore is the team's new defensive coordinator, but the Chiefs made the switch from a 4-4 to 3-4 defensive scheme in spring drills before Creekmore's arrival.
"You can do a lot of things out of the 3-4 and we feel it's a better fit for our kids," Harper said. "We're going to be young on the inside, but we have a lot of kids who can really run."
