We asked you to send in your suggestions for naming the city’s $918.7 million capital improvements package in honor of the special City Council meeting Thursday morning to do just that.
A number of you came through, and as promised, the Tulsa World's City Hall team of Zack Stoycoff and Kevin Canfield has selected a winner.
That honor belongs to “Transport Tulsa,” suggested by @BlakeLoepp.
The name references the package’s heavy emphasis on streets, public transportation and bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure.
It is, in fact, 71.1 percent transportation — $654.2 million in transportation-related projects.
In the interest of transparency, I will note that I heard and embraced Mr. Loepp’s suggestion before beginning this contest, but his name was also the first choice of Kevin Canfield, who had no knowledge of my foreknowledge.
Some other good reader-submitted names included:
• Fix Our Streets Plus, by Ed Sharrer, Jr.
• 4Ever Fixing Tulsa, by @wright_coby.
• ReVision, also by @Blake_Loepp.
And notably but not seriously: “Twerk Our Streets,” by the infamous @FakeDeweyTulsa — a Twitter account that professes to be the “Fake mayor of the real city of Tulsa” and often tweets satirically from the perspective of Mayor Dewey Bartlett.
The word “twerk,” for our older readers, is defined by urbandictionary.com as “the rhythmic gyrating of the lower fleshy extremities in a lascivious manner …”
We had many great suggestions from Tulsa World employees, but the World’s City Hall team has chosen not to recognize these as contest candidates.
So let’s put them in their own category.
Among the Tulsa World internal suggestions, the prize goes to World Staff Writer Kyle Arnold for “Pennies for Potholes,” and, a close second, his “Save Our Shocks.”
Staff Writer Randy Krehbiel suggested “Dollars for Do-hickies.” Let’s consider that an honorable mention.
Writer Althea Peterson suggested “For the Children” and “Tulsa>OKC."
What do you think? Any more suggestions? Feel free to post them in the comments section or tweet them to me @ZackStoycoffTW with the hash tag #NametheCIP.
