CNN reports
Sean Sasser, whose commitment ceremony on MTV's "
The Real World: San Francisco" was a first for U.S. television, has died. He was 44.
Sasser's longtime partner Michael Kaplan told
CNN that Sasser, who had lived with HIV for 25 years, died Wednesday from mesothelioma.
Following a June blood test that showed an abnormality, Sasser was diagnosed in July with Stage 4 mesothelioma, CNN reports.
In 1994, Sasser revealed his HIV status on the third season of the 'Real World.' His relationship with partner Pedro Zamora, also a cast member that season, was featured on the show.
Zamora and Sasser's commitment ceremony aired during the season's final episode. Not long after the episode first broadcast, Zamora died, CNN reports.
Sasser spent the last week of his life bedridden, his partner told CNN. Until five weeks ago, Sasser worked as a Washington, D.C., pastry chef.
