Red Oak graduate Lane Adams went 2-for-4 and scored a run to help lead Omaha past Durham 2-1 in the Triple-A Championship Game on Tuesday night at Allentown, Pa.
Adams, who finished the regular season with Double-A Northwest Arkansas in the Texas League. also was a standout for Omaha in the Pacific Coast League finals. Omaha is a Kansas City Royals farm team.
Nine players from this year's Northwest Arkansas team played for Omaha in the playoffs. Omaha's manager is former Tulsa Drillers player Mike Jirschele. The losing pitcher was former Kansas City Royals prospect Jake Odorizzi.
Omaha's run to the title was remarkable after finishing the regular season with a 70-74 record. It wouldn't have even made the playoffs if St. Louis' top farm team, Memphis had not blown a 4-0 lead with two outs in ninth inning in the penultimate game of the regular season at Oklahoma City, and then also lost 2-1 at Oklahoma City in the finale.
It had to be a night of mixed emotions in Kansas City's organization. At the major league level, the Royals had to be pleased with starting pitcher Yordano Ventura's major league debut as he allowed only one run in 5 2/3 innings. But a 3-0 lead slipped away as Cleveland won 5-3.
Kansas City has come so far this season and it seemed as if it might be able to pull off a wild card berth, but that type of loss is one the Royals couldn't afford and might be looked back at as being the turning point if they don't qualify for the playoffs...
