Each month Gene Curtis researches the Tulsa World files and sends out a list of the major stories that appeared a year ago, five years ago, 10 years ago, 25, 50, 75 and 100. This item from 50 years ago, June 8, 1961, caught my eye:
"Boulder Bank & Trust Co. will build a drive-in facility between Boston and Cincinnati avenues, and 14th and 15th streets on the site of a former Frank’s Pig Stand."
I remember the drive-in restaurant, but I have only a hazy recollection of ever dining there. My mom says we went there often when I was probably too young to remember but had quit going by the time it closed in 1958. She said it had burgers, fries, onion rings and barbecue, and she was fond of the barbecue ribs.
A little information uncovered by World researcher Hilary Pittman revealed Frank L. Dray purchased the land in 1942. It doesn't say when Frank's Pig Stand opened, but it must have been near that year.
It closed in 1958 and was empty for two years before it was leased by Ed Lamport of Kansas City and renamed Mr. E's Drive-In and Restaurant. That lasted only a short time before the bank took over the property.
I'm going to bet some folks out there have some great stories about Frank's Pig Stand.
