Rep. Mike Shelton
In
my Monday blog, I said Rep. Mike Shelton, D-Oklahoma City, plans a legislative study of repealing the state’s Stand Your Ground Law.
Wrong.
MaryAnn Martin, House Democratic media director, emailed me Tuesday to say Shelton’s study isn’t about repealing the law. It’s just about reviewing it.
“He’s reviewing the law. If the law requires tweaking, our hope is the study will clarify how,” she wrote.
Does that mean that repealing the law is off the table, I asked.
“Rep. Shelton is completely aware that the political climate in our state doesn't support the repeal of Stand Your Ground and open carry laws,” she said. “However, we haven't mentioned repealing the law. He is planning a comprehensive review of the law to determine if any tweaks or clarifications in the law are required. That's it.”
So, it appears practically everyone in the state Capitol agrees: There’s no political foundation for repealing State Your Ground in Oklahoma.
Shelton’s study wasn’t officially sanctioned by Speaker of the House T.W. Shannon. It’s planned for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the House chamber.
Shelton hasn’t announced who will be testifying.
