I just got of the phone with Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation game warden Tracy Daniel, who has a long-awaited waterfowl report.
The District 8 Captain from Ponca City said he has checked several parties with limits of mallards at Kaw Lake. From flocks he has seen in the air, he estimated about 10,000 mallards are in the area.
"I'm not sure what pushed them down but they've arrived in the past 24 hours or so," he said.
Coon Creek is the best access point to reach the birds. The water still is too low for launch from Bear Creek.
Hunters will absolutely need a mud-boat of some sort, a stealth boat or a camouflaged kayak to reach these birds.
"The only problem is the water is extremely shallow, but if you get up in that millet you can get some birds," he said.
