If you can't get excited about what's happening down by the riverside, then you must be very happy staying indoors with your computer games and cable TV.

The latest announcement for the Arkansas River is the new restaurant that will be replacing the old River's Edge Café at 19th Street. The old café was interesting but small and seasonal. It often presented local bands in an outdoor setting. It was always fun to see families with kids and dogs lounging on blankets or chairs while listening to a local band.

The food at the old café was adequate and the beer was cold. But it was small and was not open year-round. Now, the owner of the former Blue Rose Café has been granted the right to build a new restaurant on the site.

It will be bigger and will be open all year. The plan is interesting. It looks as if it will incorporate the river into the design. And its menu likely will be more diverse.

This goes along nicely with the improvements along the river. The work on the trails, financed by the Kaiser Family Foundation, and the new gathering spot at 41st and Riverside, paid for by QuikTrip Corp., are improving on an already popular park.

Thank goodness not everyone has given up on the Arkansas River development. Even after the disappointing defeat of the river plan, private funding has kept the dream alive.

I can't wait to dine along the river and maybe hear some more local musical talent.
