We aren't in mechs yet, but watching Robot Combat League is something I can see myself getting into. NICOLE WILDER / Syfy
SyFy should pretty much be a network that any TV geek watches. Most of their original programming is in the fantasy/science fiction realm (Well, duh!) But this latest reality series they have premiered is one that has got me hooked. And that was just after seeing a 30 second preview.
When it comes to robots, I am a sucker for them and seeing Robot Combat League come to life is almost a dream come true for me. Think of it like Real Steel, Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots and reality competitions molded into one.
The game goes like this: There are twelve teams of two and each team has been given a pre-built robot to maintain. Each week, two of them go head-to-head in an old style bash fest. This isn’t Battlebots. These aren’t small robots on wheels that slash at each other like weaponized toy cars; these are 8-feet tall humanoid robots. One person controls the robot’s leg movements through joysticks while the other team member is strapped into a device that gives one-to-one movement control of the robot’s arms. And based off the first fight, these can be brutal. Sparks fly, fluids pour out of robots, pieces of them fly off and robots will indeed shut down.
I’m unsure how competitions will go forward to determine who will fight who. The first one had the teams determine ranking by hitting a target the fastest, but beyond that I am unsure how this show will fill out an entire hour. But I must say I am quite anxious to see each and every one of these robots fight each other.
If you’re like me and love giant robots fighting each other, be sure to check out this show. Robot Combat League airs on the SyFy Tuesday at 9pm. SyFy has posted the first episode online, so
check it out for yourself.
