Apparently, actor Russell Crowe and a pal got a little "Open Water" this weekend before the U.S. Coast Guard guided them back to civilization.

The "Gladiator" actor, currently in New York's Long Island area filming the new Darren Aronofsky movie, "Noah," had set off kayaking from Cold Spring Harbor Saturday afternoon with a friend when the two got lost once it got dark and ended up beaching their kayaks 10 miles away at Huntington Bay.

The 48-year-old actor made that clarification today, still it was the sound of Crowe calling out at around 10 p.m. Saturday night that caught the attention of coast guard officials patrolling the area.

U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Robert Swieciki told the Associated Press the officer aboard didn’t recognize Crowe but ‘paddled over and brought them to Huntington Harbor,’ People magazine reports.

"It wasn't really a rescue," Swieciki told the AP. "Really, more of just giving someone a lift."

Grateful for the lift, Crowe tweeted a few hours after the rescue, ahem, “assistance” -

People reports both Crowe and his friend were wearing life jackets and sustained no injuries during the incident.
