Jessica Lange returns for the second season of "American Horror Story" this fall on FX but as an entirely new character. PRASHANT GUPTA/FX

Ryan Murphy is spilling the beans about season 2 of "American Horror Story."

Murphy, co-creator of FX's horror series, revealed where and when the second season of the series will take place during a panel at the TV Academy Wednesday, according to hollywoodreporter.com.

"Season 2) is set on the East Coast at an institution for the criminally insane that is run by Jessica (actress Jessica Lange, who starred in the series' first season)," Murphy said during the panel. He confirmed that his previous "hint" of the new location was in last season's "Birth" episode and that is was "something that Sarah Paulson's character, Billie Deans, says to Jessica and Taisa as she's sage-ing the house and talking about places where evil collects: We talk about institutions and prisons and things like that. That was the clue," he said.

"American Horror Story” first aired as a drama series last season but Murphy announced after the two lead characters, played by Dylan McDermott and Connie Britton, died in the show's season finale that the show would become a horror anthology series with a new cast, location, time period and basic premise. There will be no mention of anything or anyone from season 1, he added.

Cast members Lange, Zachary Quinto, Evan Peters, Sarah Paulson and Lily Rabe will be back when the series returns in the fall but playing new characters this time around, the website reported.

"The idea," he explained in the panel, "is to work with actors that you love and are excited by. The second season, everybody who was announced, there will be other people up on this stage who are not announced who will also be in it but are playing the polar opposite of what they were in the first season in every way."

Adam Levine, Maroon Five frontman and musician coach on "The Voice," agreed to take a part in the series as soon as he heard it, Murphy said.

"He's a sexy guy so he needs to play a sexy guy but the guy that is different than who you think he would play," said Murphy.

"I pitched him the part and he listened, slack jawed, and simply said, 'I'm in.' The second season is fun, sexy and baroque. It has a lot of meat to it; it's a really gritty part. He's with a girl and they play characters called The Lovers."
