Check out THURSDAY's special WEEKEND section in the Tulsa World for the cover story on the Flaming Lips -- and an interview with frontman Wayne Coyne. The band headlines the Brady District Block Party this Saturday. Tickets are still available at tulsaworld.com/protix and other Cain's ticketing outlets.

The Flaming Lips will perform a full set of music spanning the band’s nearly 30-year career. Their set starts at 9:35 p.m. on Saturday.

A sneak peek:

The level of freedom the Flaming Lips enjoys is also rare in the music business. In many instances, work and play are a slight matter of degree, if they’re separable at all.

“Really, in life, anything can happen,” said Lips frontman Wayne Coyne.

That’s never more true than the recent firestorm of original music the band has released in recent months, in an array of formats, from vinyl to mp3 to video to flash drives embedded in edible art.

The band’s collaborated with a shocking number of musicians in recent months: Ben Gibbard from Death Cab for Cutie, Stars, Nick Cave, Ariel Pink, Lightning Bolt — he’s also reached out to rock legends Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin and Sonic Youth. He now has four tracks he’s working on with Black Moth Super Rainbow. Those will be out soon, too, he promises.
“I’m just moving along, moving along,” Coyne said.

“I ran into Ben (Gibbard) at a festival last night and we just started talking. That’s how it happens ... We play so many shows with interesting people. This is how I get to know them. Like when Ke$ha was in Tulsa a couple of weeks ago. I want to do something with her. ... It’s just something interesting to do, something we can listen to later.”

More about the bands:

Flaming Lips: This Oklahoma City-based rock act got its start in 1983 in Norman. Melodically, their sound contains lush, multi-layered, psychedelic rock arrangements. They are also acclaimed for their elaborate live shows, which are deliriously grand and free-spirited. The 2002 single “Do You Realize??” is the official rock song of this great state.

Primus: Primus is characterized by their irreverent and often non-serious approach to music. Oh, and amazing bass playing skills. The band is best known for “Sailing the Seas of Cheese,” “Pork Soda” and “Tales from the Punchbowl,” released between 1991 and 1996. The band reunited last year and will release its new album “Green Naugahyde” in September.

Mutemath: The alternative rock band from New Orleans formed in 2003. Mutemath is best known for their video of their song “Typical,” which features the band performing the song backward and have over 2.3 million views on YouTube.

Civil Twilight: Civil Twilight is a three-piece alternative-indie rock band from Cape Town, South Africa, but is now located in Nashville. Its sound is often compared to early U2.

AWOLNation: AWOLNation is an American indie rock band and the solo project of Aaron Bruno, formerly of Under the Influence of Giants and Hometown Hero.

Solid Gold: Solid gold is an electro-glam band from Minneapolis.

Particle: Hey Particle People, here’s your chance to see this prog rock jam band live.

That 1 Guy: You will not recognize this one-man-band’s handcrafted musical instruments. That’s the point. Really a must-see.

The Pretty Black Chains: Loud rock music with a Devil-may-care attitude. What more could you ask for from this Oklahoma City breakout band?
