There are various kinds of coaches.
There are your glory-hungry hams who know where all the TV cameras are, your Patinos and your Caliparis and your Creans. The good thing about these guys is they'll talk to anybody at any time, at any place.
Then there are your coaches like the New England Patriot dullard who think they're too good for the lowly media. It's true, many media representatives ask idiotic questions. But there's no reason to be rude.
And so now into the Coaching Hall of Blunders enters San Antonio Spur coach Greg Popoff, one of those who think his rudeness trumps their rudeness.
The media is scared to death of coaches like the SA guy.
True, Spur coach Popoff has won some titles. Would others with two or three or four hall of fame players have coached as well? Who knows.
But one thing is for sure. The San Antonio coach blotched game six versus Miami.
Look at these decisions.
1. He can't devise a play whereby Duncan throws the ball into Parker. Instead, from half court, Duncan throws the ball in to some kid who misses one of two free throws.
2. Needing only a defensive rebound, the coach benches Duncan.
Miami misses a shot, gets the rebound, makes a three.
3. Still needing only a defensive rebound, the coach benches Duncan again.
Miami misses a shot, gets the rebound, makes a three.
4. Needing a three, the SA coach benches Parker and watches the game end on a clunker.
Sure, the Spur guy was fouled at the end.
But since nobody could make two free throws, who is to say anybody could make three.
The title was so close, they were about to roll the trophy up Parker's drive way. A worker had to throw a towel over it and hide it under the bleachers during the last minute collapse.
Perhaps the SA coach was resting Duncan to prepare him for retirement.
