Sapulpa pulled off one of the biggest upsets in area boys basketball during January with a 50-41 victory at Class 6A No. 5 Broken Arrow on Tuesday night.
Sam Johnson scored 15 points and Ben Johnson added 13 to lead the Chieftains (7-9) over the Tigers (11-4).
“Winning our first playoff game last year was the biggest win we’ve had since the ‘90s” said Sapulpa coach James Womack. “But this was the biggest win we’ve had since then as far as being an underog against a highly ranked team.”
Broken Arrow missed all 14 of its shots from the field during the third quarter when it was limited to only one point.
“We did a great job contesting their shots,” Womack said. “They are a good team and I know that if we played them again, they probably wouldn’t miss as many shots as they did Tuesday.”
Sapulpa, which made 14-of-19 free throws, is better than its record as it has three key players, Ben and Sam Johnson and Sam Gottsch, healthy after they have been plagued by injuries earlier in the season.
“We’re coming together and this should give us a lot of confidence,” Womack said. “What I like is our players have already moved on and are focused on the Highway 97 rivalry game at Sand Springs on Friday.”...
Union commitments: Cornerback Kahlil Harper has committed to play football at Army. Harper had 44 tackles and an interception in 2012. Wide receiver Khalid Kornegay, who was earlier committed to Tulsa, plans to sign instead with South Dakota along with defensive back Marquice Fletcher. Offensive lineman Brandon Berg committed to Missouri Southern State and offensive lineman Jacob Hendrickson committed to Northeastern A&M.
Verbal commitments are not binding. National Signing Day is Wednesday.
