An industry trade group is warning of “a world shortage of pork” due to drought conditions that destroyed corn and soybean crops this year.

Less feed led to herds declining across the European Union “at a significant rate,” according to the National Pig Association in Britain.

In U.S. warehouses, the pork supply soared to a record last month, rising 31% at the end of August from a year earlier, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The surge came as farmers scaled down their herds when feeding them became increasingly expensive.

And this shortage comes just as bacon seems to be making its way into all the food groups, both savory and sweet. There is hardly a food that doesn’t have a bacon manifestation anymore, is there?

Bacon cupcakes. Bacon fudge. Bacon shakes.

The demand certainly is high for bacon.

Perhaps, a shortage might turn the tide on that trend.
