Wait a second, National Weather Service... are you saying that the Panhandle is about to get MORE snow?!
Happy Winter Solstice, everyone. And Happy Hanukkah too!
For those of you that have just heard "winter solstice" in passing, in a nutshell, it's that time of the year when the days stop getting short (daylight-wise) and start getting longer again! For Oklahoma, this lands at 11:30 p.m. tonight. For more information, click
here. And... if you need more Hanukkah info, my colleague Bill Sherman had a wonderful story in today's edition
here.
But, enough on the winter holidays... I believe that Oklahoma received some snow these past few days and you would like some more information!
I could just direct you to the National Weather Service's storm chart
here, but let's just simplify. Who got the most snow and where were they?
I should first note that the time period in question is 11:12 a.m. Monday through 8:14 a.m. Tuesday. Very specific, huh? It's probably because they're scientists and researchers, heh.
15 inches: Kenton (Cimarron County)
12 inches: Boise City (Cimarron County)
10 inches: Southwest of Romero (Oldham County, Texas)
7 inches: Stratford (Sherman County, Texas)
7 inches: Southwest of Salhart (Hartley County, Texas)
7 inches: Guymon (Texas County)
6 inches: Texline (Dallam County, Texas)
5 inches: Beaver (Beaver County)
4.5 inches: Perryton (Ochiltree County, Texas)
4 inches: Dumas (Moore County, Texas)
4 inches: Morse (Hansford County, Texas)
Need help finding some of these cities/areas? I've provided a map in the upper-right corner of this blog, which also tells us that... yes, more snow is indeed on the way for the Southern Plains area on Thursday and Friday if this forecast holds up.
Realizing that not every area mentioned on the snowfall totals is on that map, here's a map of this Oklahoma and Texas area by county:

PS: If you checked out the weather service graphic with the various snowfalls and noticed that some identical areas had different amounts of snow, check the times that those snowfall amounts recorded. For example, Boise City had 12 inches after 11:30 p.m., but only 7 inches by 5:30 p.m. I have taken the highest total for each area.
