If you’ve missed it on Facebook, school has started.
I joined the hordes of parents posting photos of our kids smiling at the schoolhouse doors.
The childless may find this trend annoying.
But, this is what social media is about - sharing our lives with people near and far.
Getting our children off for another school year becomes a source of pride.
There is an accomplishment in having them in new clothes, supplies in hand and in the building on time.
It may not seem like much, but it’s a marker of the passage of time.
I look at each child’s photo posted by my friends, long-ago friends and quasi-friends.
With the phasing out of Christmas cards, this is one way I can catch up.
I can see my college roommate‘s daughter looking more like her each year.
Another college friend’s son clearly has her sense of humor with the funny face he made.
I’m astonished some high school friends have seniors in high school.
My first-grader donned a pout and a streak of pink hair (temporary chalk, I swear!) that was an attention grabber.
She explained her sour attitude: “Mom, you’re embarrassing me with the pictures. Stop it already.”
As I looked around, there were at least five other parents taking a photo of their kids at that exact time.
I might as well start embarrassing her early, so I kept snapping away.
Seeing all the photos online makes me wish I had a first day of school again.
It’s the start of something new.
It’s a clean slate.
It’s the first of many events to come.
