Jacob Evans pitched five shutout innings to help Oklahoma outlast Oral Roberts 9-8 in 15 innings late Tuesday night at L. Dale Mitchell Park in Norman.
Evans, a freshman from Broken Arrow, improved to 3-0 as the Sooners (18-5) extended ORU's school-record baseball losing streak to 10.
OU scored in the 15th off Taylor Tryon (0-1). Matt Oberste led off with a single, was bunted to second and scored when Mac James lined a two-out single.
It was ORU's longest game since playing 16 innings against Centenary in 2008.
ORU's woes this season have usually been due to a lack of hitting while the pitching has been solid. Those roles were reversed for the first nine innings. ORU scored six in the second inning and had an 8-4 lead through five before giving up two runs each in the sixth and seventh.
Logan Domenico had three hits and two RBIs to lead ORU's offense. Oberste and Hunter Haley and Hunter Haley had four hits each for OU.
The Golden Eagles' previous worst losing streak was seven in March 2006. The good news for ORU is that the '06 Golden Eagles reached the Super Regional.
In recent years, the start of conference play often has jump-started ORU when it has struggled with a tough non-conference schedule. But the schedule doesn't get any easier when ORU opens Southland play against Central Arkansas (18-3) in a three-game series that starts Friday.
The scheduled starting time for Friday's game has been moved up to 4 p.m. due to the weather forecast.
