Oklahoma and Oklahoma State and -- heck, every school in the Big 12 -- make a living in football by finding recruits in population-rich Texas.

When Texas A&M defected to the SEC, there was speculation that Pandora’s box had been opened. Would recruiters from SEC schools have an excuse to invade Texas and say “hey, come to our league and you can still play against one of your home-state schools.”

Of course, some SEC schools have always recruited Texas. You go wherever the players are and many SEC schools, because of brand name, can recruit nationally.

South Carolina doesn’t usually harvest prospects in Texas. Gamecocks coach Steve Spurrier was asked during his SEC media day press session Tuesday if he will try to change that.

“No, we will not recruit Texas,” he said.

“We have plenty of ballplayers in South Carolina and our border states. We sort of call Florida a border state, but it’s not. Florida, Georgia, North Carolina are mainly our targets right there, and our state. We’re not going to go into Texas and compete against Oklahoma, Texas, all them guys.

“If there’s a connection or something, somebody calls up, says that this guy wants to play at South Carolina, certainly we may do it then.”

But don’t be surprised if other SEC schools try to make inroads where none existed previously.
