New Star Trek Into Darkness images and information releasedWithin the last week, numerous news sources discussed plot reveals for
Star Trek into Darkness. Spoilers ahead!
We learned that the villain may or may not be any one of the theoretical baddies we have conjectured about so far. Meanwhile, Paramount has officially named the villain as John Harrison.
I want to point out that we need to be careful of Abrams and his ways (I say this with a sense of awesome, because he's one of the few people in Hollywood making movies exciting right now). Abrams plays hype like no one else.
Remember Cloverfield and Super 8? We were convinced that Super 8 was a teen super hero flick, when it couldn't have been more different. We thought Cloverfield was a Godzilla movie, and we were wrong again. While Cumberbatch may be the villain, he may not be 'THE' villain. Apple's Japanese trailer showed us that the scene with two touching hands is Cumberbatch's character and Spock, not Kirk and Spock.
(It is interesting to note that John Harrison was the man who invented the Chronometer in the 1750s. If you think this is a stretch, you missed the A lternate Reality Game for the previous Trek movie. io9, Comingsoon.net and more are all beginning to claim they believe this is a decoy name, and not the true identity of the villain. At this point, he could even be Carol Marcus' son David, from the alternate timeline future. No one knows.)
It was revealed this week that Alice Eve's character was Carol Marcus, there will be Klingons with modern forehead makeup and original series decoration. We will even see Quo'nos the Klingon homeworld.
It's also been revealed that the red planet (called Nibiru), Enterprise rising from the ocean, and the lava scene with Spock are all part of the beginning mini-adventure we join mid-mission in the beginning of the movie. The official trailers and IMAX preview begin tomorrow, so more information should be available then.
(Personal note: I've had several conversations with a fellow Prairie Nerd Jason Powers, and it's a general hope among not only us but among other reporting sources that we not see a movie adaptation of a TV episode, but rather a completely new story with new villains.)
Two movie critics have been answering specific questions about the previews on their Twitter feeds, and can be found
here. Make sure you attend the Hobbit IMAX showing, because it includes 9+ minutes of preview footage from the movie.
