Did anyone besides me notice that there were not too many Hollywood celebrities visible at the Democratic convention? There are never many at the Republican convention. Not too many of those "Hollywood liberals" are Republicans, although I did see Jon Voight with the talking heads at the GOP hoedown this week.
The Democrats might have finally figured out that an endorsement by a movie star doesn't carry much weight in that vast area between California and New York. Oprah doesn't count. Despite her millions everyone considers her just one of them. Go figure.
Personally, I don't pay much attention to whom movie stars endorse. Remember Alec Baldwin's pledge to leave the country if George W. Bush was elected? Since then he has had a hit sitcom and appeared in several movies. Much like bad movies, idle threats are soon forgotten.
Here's some advice for movie stars from out here in middle America: Don't take yourselves so seriously. And don't get the notion that you're more important than you really are. After all, you're actors. Stick with what you know best. This doesn't mean that you shouldn't be involved in politics. Everyone should be involved in elections. Apathy remains a great threat to democracy.
And politicians, especially you Democrats, there's no need to hide or be embarrassed by any endorsement. If I were a big Hollywood star or a big-time politician and someone asked me either who I was endorsing or what I thought of an endorsement from an actor there is a simple answer. The actors just need to say that they are Americans and have a right to an opinion. And then shut up. The politicians should explain that an endorsement from Hollywood carries no more weight than an endorsement from the person on the assembly line.
Don't make a big deal of it. Unless, of course, it's an endorsement by Oprah.
