I think I bought the very first copy of Stephen King's novel "The Shining" to be purchased in Tulsa. My 16-year-old self was -- to date myself even more -- browsing through the B. Dalton Booksellers in Southroad Mall when a clerk brought out a large box and began unloading copies of the book to put on display. I grabbed one of the $8.95 copies and headed for the cashier.

I still have the dust jacket of that book, which is now wrapped around a book club edition of the novel that Stephen King signed during a visit several to the University of Oklahoma (it's a long story, which I shan't go into here as to why that switch was made).

All that to say King has announced that the sequel to "The Shining," to be titled "Doctor Sleep," will be published in a year and five days -- 24 September 2013, to be precise.

The new book will be about Dan Torrance, the young boy at the center of "The Shining," now grown to adulthood, now using his psychic power, or "shining," to comfort the dying at the hospice where he works.

This being a Stephen King novel, comfort is something that quickly becomes a rare quality.

The Guardian's website has more complete description of the book's plot: tulsaworld/kingnovel.

And here is a You Tube video in which King reads an excerpt from "Doctor Sleep":
