Utah State head coach Matt Wells remembers that special day when Steve Davis presented him an all-state award following his 1991 high school football season.
Two of the best quarterbacks in Sallisaw High School history were side-by-side, proudly wearing Black Diamonds letterman jackets.
On Monday morning, Wells was saddened by the news of Davis’ death.
“Steve was a man of faith and a man of family. Family was important to him,” Wells said. “I think he was a hometown hero to a lot of us.”
Nearly two decades separated Wells and the legendary Oklahoma quarterback in age. When Davis was winning national championships at OU in 1974 and 1975, Wells was just a toddler.
“Just hearing those guys talking about him, whether it was the Sallisaw coaches or my dad or people around town … there were great stories shared,” Wells said.
Wells is getting ready for Utah State’s spring practices, which start on Tuesday. But a part of him will be in Sallisaw, where he is thinking of family friends Jiggs and Patsy Davis, Steve Davis’ parents.
“It’s a celebration in heaven, but sad for us here on earth,” Wells said.
