This has nothing to do with our current mayor, who I think is doing a good job, or any of the current problems in city government, but does anyone think Tulsa made a big mistake when we went to a strong-mayor form of government?

I accept that the commission form of government wasn't going to stand up to a court challenge and had to go, but I'm not so sure we went the right direction.

I look at Oklahoma City's city manager system and have to wonder if some of the successes they have enjoyed in recent years starts with relatively stable, nonpolitical municipal leadership. Should Tulsa have gone that way?

OKC still has a mayor, a focus for marshaling the political will to do big things, but they also have a professional to make sure the sewers are flowing and the streets are getting paved.

The ultimate danger of a strong mayor system is the possibility of a weak person as the strong mayor. Again, I don't think that's the situation we're in now, but in a political environment, it's a dangerous possibility.
