In a fishing-report update tour crappie angler and guide Barry Morrow of Eufaula said don’t overlook the shallows for summertime crappie.
Morrow said he had been catching crappie at 12-14 feet around bridges and rip-rap near water 40-50 feet deep.
But on Monday he also said he planned to go exploring shallow areas back in the creeks. He couldn’t say for sure what he would find, however.
Morrow followed up today to say they’re catching crappie dipping jigs around timber in the shallows back in the creeks – in 2 to 3 feet of water.
“We were out in 5, 6 feet of water and not getting bit. I said I didn’t think we were shallow enough,” he said.
The water temp back in the creeks is just over 80 degrees, he said.
Morrow said they’re dipping single ¼-ounce Lindy jigs tipped with grubs on an 11-foot rod with just about 3 or 4 feet of line out. They’re letting the bait drop real slow around the trees and stumps and then lifting it slowly back up. “Sometimes they hit so fast you can barely get your rod back up out of the tree,” he said.
The lesson – don’t overlook shallow water for summertime crappie.
Fast action on crappies, in shallow water, in August – who knew?
