Former University of Tulsa basketball coach John Phillips was named as Summit Christian’s boys basketball coach on Friday.

Phillips replaces Roscoe Migliore, who resigned recently after five season to pursue a business opportunity.

"I am really looking forward to it," Phillips said. "I love coaching and working with kids, and Summit is a great school."

Phillips, 65, returns to high school coaching for the first time since a two-year stint at his alma mater, McLain. He went 28-21 with the Titans from 2007-09 and led them to the 4A state tournament in 2008 and within one win of the ‘09 state tournament.

“We are excited about the hiring of Mr. Phillips and look forward to him joining the SCA staff,” Summit principal Michael Rogers said in a press release.

Phillips will lead Summit’s seventh-through-12th grade program and also will be on the staff as a full-time teacher.

Phillips was 61-42 at TU’s head coach from 2001-04. He led the Hurricane to its last two NCAA Tournament appearances in 2002 and ‘03. He also was an assistant on TU’s NCAA Elite Eight team in 2000 and NIT champions in 2001.

Phillips has more than 300 high-school wins in 20 seasons. He has led teams to eight state tournaments. Phillips coached Broken Arrow to the Class 6A state title in 1997. He led Edison to 4A state runner-up finishes in 1985 and ‘86. Phillips was the Tulsa World’s metro coach of the year with Edison in 1983 and Broken Arrow in 1997. He also was the World's state co-coach of the year in 1997.
