According to a statement from the office of ex-President
George W. Bush, the 67-year-old is in high spirits after undergoing a heart stent procedure Tuesday.
During Bush's annual physical examination yesterday, doctors at Dallas' Cooper Clinic discovered a blockage in an artery in Bush's heart.
"At the recommendation of his doctors, President Bush agreed to have a stent placed to open the blockage," reads the statement.
The procedure was performed this morning, without complication, at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital.
TIME magazine reports it is unclear what type of stent Bush received but the mesh tubes, which are inserted like a scaffold, come in a variety of forms.
New stent technology makes the hour-long procedure less invasive than bypass surgery, which TIME says, accounts for many patients who receive stents. Bush, however, falls into a separate but growing category of patients who are advised to get a stent because they show early signs of heart blockages.
In the statement Bush's office released this morning, the former president thanks his family, friends and fellow citizens for their prayers and well wishes.
"And he encourages us all to get our regular check-ups."
