After any college football game, it’s interesting to compare the media coverage of the winning team to the coverage of the losing team.

Following the University of Tulsa’s 27-26 victory over Fresno State, the Tulsa World reported on TU’s defensive masterpiece. The Fresno (Calif.) Bee reported that the Bulldog offense “stalled.”

Excepts from the World’s coverage:

“It was expected that Saturday’s Fresno State-University of Tulsa showdown would be defined by offensive highlights. The Golden Hurricane entered with a scoring average of 44.7 points. The Bulldogs averaged 43.7. Ultimately, however, the star of this show was the TU defense.”

“Against a Fresno State offense that one week earlier scorched Colorado for 665 yards and 69 points, the Hurricane defense dominated for three periods and limited the Bulldogs to two offensive touchdowns and 364 total yards.”

“Fresno State’s only second-half points were scored by its defense, when outside linebacker Tristan Okpalaugo picked off a Cody Green screen-pass attempt and scored on a 21-yard return.”

“Using its Alex Singleton power ground game – combined with a Green-to-Jordan James third-down pass – TU killed most of the final six minutes off of the clock.”

Excerpts from the Bee’s coverage:

“This time, Fresno State's fast start couldn't get the opposition to fold. This time, the same Bulldogs offense that a week ago could move up and down the field with ease had lost its rhythm and didn't know how to sustain its success. And that shaky kicking game displayed through summer camp, which had mostly been consistent so far this season, reappeared and proved to be quite costly.”

“Fresno State's offense was held scoreless throughout the final three quarters and kicker Quentin Breshears missed three chip-shot kicks as the Bulldogs stayed winless on the road and failed to win back-to-back games.”

“For a four-minute span during the first quarter, Fresno State played just as it had during a 69-14 win against Colorado last week. But then the offense stalled for three whole quarters and the kicking game never corrected itself.”

“It was quite a contrast from a week ago when Fresno State's offense scored touchdowns on its first six drives against Colorado.”
