University of Tulsa football coaches have had to put in a little extra time preparing for this week’s opponent.

When Fresno State comes to Chapman Stadium on Saturday night, the Golden Hurricane staff will have just three games of film study by which to compile a game plan.

“We’ll do our research,” said TU head coach Bill Blankenship.

Blankenship said “99 percent” of his team’s film prep will come from the Bulldogs’ three games this season: a 37-10 victory over Weber State, a 42-25 loss at Oregon, and a 69-14 victory over Colorado.

That’s because Fresno State has a first-year, first-time head coach in Tim DeRuyter. TU coaches studied what kind of tendencies DeRuyter used when he was defensive coordinator in 2010 and 2011 at Texas A&M. But that’s just defense.

Offensively, the Bulldogs’ offensive coordinator, Dave Schramm, has just two seasons experience as co-offensive coordinator at Utah.

“The (FSU) offense has a Utah flavor to it,” Blankenship said. “It certainly, the way they use (quarterback Derek) Carr, is reminiscent of what you’ve seen from the good Utah teams they had recently.”

Blankenship said TU coaches didn’t put on endless reels of Utah video to uncover obscure tendencies.

“Personnel changes, and if you put too much on Xs and Os, you miss what happens when you get the people in there, the Jimmies and Joes,” Blankenship said. “That really does make a difference.”
