“One Life to Live” fans buoyed by the news that four of their favorite soap opera characters will be joining ABC’s “General Hospital” may need to temper their enthusiasm.
The network’s move may only be a temporary reprieve for “GH” - one whose time slot is allegedly being taken over by the new syndicated Katie Couric talk show “Katie” being sold to television stations.
The talker has been cleared in more than 90 percent of the country including 95 of the top 100 markets. No one has mentioned the “C" word (cancellation) but there doesn’t appear to be a place for the show in ABC’s lineup. The time slots for the already canceled soap operas have been taken over by much cheaper to produce lifestyle shows “The Chew” and ‘The Revolution.”
As for the soap's future, ABC Entertainment Group president Paul Lee said at the Television Critics Association winter press tour “We’ll see.“
“I’m a fan of 'General Hospital’ but we haven’t made a decision,” he said. “and we don’t really have a time frame on it.”
Daytime dramas “All My Children” and “One Life to Live” were both jettisoned by the network. ‘GH” has been on the air for 49 seasons so far.
