“The Butler” and “We’re the Millers” held onto their respective spots at Nos. 1 and 2 this week based on strong word of mouth buzz.
“The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones” came in at No. 3, with a little over $9 million, making it the latest in a desperate attempt by studios to bring you the next “Twi-Potter Games” that will probably not go anywhere.
“The World’s End” came in at No. 4 with almost $9 million, which sounds pretty bad for a wide-release sci-fi opening, but is actually the highest opening for the creative team of Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and Edgar Wright’s so-called “Cornetto Trilogy,” that began with Zombie flick “Shaun of the Dead” ($3,330,781)in 2004 and continued with buddy cop movie “Hot Fuzz” ($5,848,464) in 2007.
Pegg and Frost re-teamed for 2011’s “Paul,” which made $13,043,310 in its opening weekend, but that movie was made domestically and had a much stronger supporting cast. “The World’s End,” about a small town taken over by alien robots, only cost $20 million to make, so it should make that back pretty quickly. This creative team makes niche movies that were never really going to connect with wide audiences anyway, and I’m pretty sure they like it that way.
Disney’s “Planes” is still in the running, having made $5.5 million, which was good enough for seventh place, with “Elysium” right behind it.
The big surprise was that horror movie “You’re Next,” didn’t go anywhere, opening at just $7 million. With just a few early exceptions, low budget horror flicks have been off the charts this summer, and many outlets had assumed that “You’re Next” would follow that trend, especially after it was well received at Toronto International Film Festival. It ranks as the lowest opening for a horror movie yet in 2013.
Woody Allen’s “Blue Jasmine” went into wide release after five weeks in the art houses, and managed to crack the top 10 at No. 9 with $4.3 million.
“Kick-Ass 2” took the No. 10 spot in its second week, down from No. 4 last week.
