A friend turned me onto Elvis Costello's talk show, Spectacle, on the Sundance channel. It and Formula One racing are the two best reasons I've found for keeping my overpriced full-range cable box.

A few weeks ago Costello had opera star Renee Fleming on. She sang everything from opera to folk music and was very good at all of it. When she sings pop music she brings her voice down an octave, eliminates the diva tone and really sounds a lot like Cher, only better.

Last week the guest was Herbie Hancock, who did too much talking and too little performing.

This week Costello had a series of young independent songwriters, most prominently Jakob Dylan. Good show.

The whole experience has me debating getting tickets to Elvis Costello's upcoming show at the Cain's. On the one hand, I've been a fan for a long time. On the other hand, the last time I went to a music show at the Cain's the sound quality was so bad and so assaultingly loud that nothing that was performed was recognizable.

I'm going to chew on that one of for awhile.

I couldn't find any video of the Renee Fleming show, so here's a bit of this week's broadcast with Jakob Dylan and others doing one of EC's big hits:
