Aaron Rodgers and his Green Bay offensive teammates aren't helping many fantasy players this year
Lost in the midst of Monday night’s “game-winning touchdown” by the Seattle Seahawks that was confirmed Tuesday morning by the NFL as the “correct call,” was a more important development that is not getting enough attention.
The “losing” team Monday night has a very putrid offense right now.
How can the Green Bay Packers have such a sorry offensive attack? Through three games of the 2012 season, the 1-2 Packers have scored just four offensive touchdowns. They average just 19 points a game. In going 15-2 last season, Green Bay tallied 560 points in the regular season (the second-most in NFL history) and were held under 24 points on only two occasions (14 in the regular-season loss at Kansas City and 20 in the home playoff loss to the Giants).
This is a very disturbing development for fantasy football players.
Aaron Rodgers was the first quarterback taken in many fantasy drafts, yet he does not resemble the MVP of a year ago.
Greg Jennings and
Jordy Nelson were deemed No. 1 receivers for many fantasy teams. Receivers
Randall Cobb and
James Jones are considered legitimate third receivers for some teams. Tight end
Jermichael Finley is viewed as a top-tier performer at his position. Even free-agent acquisition
Cedric Benson receives a fair amount of consideration as a starting fantasy running back.
The Packers have been tested in the first three games this year by quality defenses. Still, there is plenty of offensive talent to avoid such a sharp decline in production.
Veteran Packers beat reporter Bob McGinn of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel wrote two weeks ago the team would be wise to deal Jennings (whose contract ends after this season) before the Oct. 30 trade deadline. That is food for thought for fantasy owners of Jennings and some his Packers teammates.
If your roster depth at a position allows it, see what you can get now for Jennings or Nelson or, gulp, yes even Rodgers. It could be the boost your fantasy team needs instead of trying to wait and see if these Packers standouts will (or can?) return to quality form.
