Michael Turner's late runs Monday night helped Atlanta earn a victory on the field - and earn some fantasy players a win as well

Have you ever heard the phrase “every play counts?” From a personal standpoint, that was oh so true in the final possession of Monday night’s Atlanta-Denver contest.

In one of the fantasy leagues I participate in, I was locked in a close encounter with my opponent. We each had two players participating in the game (I had Atlanta WR Roddy White and Atlanta RB Michael Turner, while he had Atlanta WR Julio Jones and Denver WR Demaryius Thomas). Our league’s scoring format is a point-per-reception, so the point totals can change quickly.

When the Falcons got the ball back with 3:25 left leading the Broncos 27-21, I held a slim one-point lead on my opponent. A few runs by Turner leading to a first down would close out the win for the Falcons - and a fantasy win for me as well. Turner, who had 20 yards rushing for the game entering the drive, could not get the first down after two runs totaling five yards (and no additional points for me either!). Jones was able to get that first down just before the two-minute warning with a 7-yard catch (that pushed his paltry total to 14 yards for the game). But that catch was worth two points to my opponent and gave him a one-point lead.

Fortunately, Denver still had one timeout left and Atlanta could not take three genuflections to run out the clock. Maybe because Falcons coach Mike Smith seems like a nice guy and had no idea what kind of trouble his veteran running back would get into a few hours later, he did the right thing by me and gave the ball to Turner again.

A first-down run by Turner netted just two yards. After Denver’s last timeout, Turner ripped off a run of 15 yards for the game-clinching first down. The run also pushed his rushing total from 27 to 42 yards and gave me the necessary two fantasy points to pull out a one-point victory.

To quote my fantasy opponent’s alter-ego “Heh heh heh!” Sorry Phill, but this thrill of victory is oh so sweet!
