Friday the 13th was good to the horror genre this weekend, as "Insidious: Chapter 2" took the top spot with $41 million. That's pretty good, as the original from 2011 only made $54 million during its entire run. Horror has been very popular this year, and "Insidious Chapter 2" follows that trend. Releasing it on Friday the 13th in the fall didn't hurt either.
In second place, "The Family" opened to $14.5 million. The comedy starring Robert De Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer is about a mob family relocated to France under the witness protection program. That's a pretty decent opening especially given that the budget was only $30 million, even with big name stars in it.
"Riddick" fell hard into 3rd place, making only $7 million, bringing its two-week total to $41 million. Much like "The World's End," really only "Riddick" fans go see "Riddick" movies, so this isn't that big of a surprise.
"Lee Daniels' The Butler" and "We're the Millers" are still chugging along, and took the No. 5 and No. 6 spots. These two movies have turned out to be work horses this year, and it's amazing that both are still in the top 10 after more than a month.
Spanish language film "Instructions Not Included" added yet another 216 screens this week, after adding 369 last week. They started with 348, and are now in almost a thousand. This was a good enough strategy to keep them in the No. 6 spot, bringing in $4.2 million. That brings their total up to $26 million after only three weeks, an on an estimated $5 million budget.
The rest of the top 10 are hold-outs from over the summer which you can tell is almost done, as there is only one film in there, "Elysium," that had a budget of over $100 million.
