Little girls love sparkly jewels. So when should they go in for ear piercing?

My husband swore our daughter would not have her ears pierced until she was 16 years old.

I was thinking more like 6 or 7, which was when I went through this rite of girlhood. But I figured this would be a battle for another day.
The day is here, and I’m so unsure about it.

For nearly a year, our 4-year-old has been wearing us down with wanting earrings.

I thought it was a phase. I thought she didn’t understand what was involved.

I thought she’d just let it go.

I thought wrong.
My stubborn girl with a long memory negotiated a verbal contract effective eight weeks before her fifth birthday – in time to get new earrings on the big day. She got her Nana as a backup and a witness. Smart girl.

So, we are approaching birthday No. 5, and I relented. She picked out the most expensive and sparkly pair available at Claire’s.

She shed no tears, made no screams or sounds as they pricked her earlobes. She has been obsessive about cleaning and turning them.

Not everyone in my family is so supportive, looking at this as too grownup. But some think it’s adorable on her. My husband is suspiciously and wisely quiet on the issue.

I’m looking for thoughts on whether age is an indicator of earring readiness and what locations are best for ear piercing of little girls.
