Did anyone say cocktails?
Characters on the hit AMC series Mad Men make the most of their cocktail hour – even if that hour happens to fall in the middle of the day.
The show has even revived some of the classics, such as Don Draper’s fave the Old Fashioned.
After a 17-month hiatus, the season 5 premiere of Mad Men will be on Sunday and fans can hardly wait.
Perhaps, this is cause for celebration at your house.
Perhaps, even a cocktail.
Maker's Mark Bourbon offered a couple recipes for two popular classic cocktails of the time period.
I have also included one that was inspired by the show. The Sterling Cooper Collins was invented by Nicolas O'Conner, a bartender at Apoteke in New York City.
Cheers!
Old Fashioned
2 parts bourbon, such as Maker's Mark
3 dashes of Angostura Bitters
1 sugar cube
1 orange
Maraschino Cherries
Soda
Ice
1. Place sugar cube into the bottom of an Old-Fashioned glass and add Angostura bitters directly to the sugar cube.
2. Add one orange slice, one cherry, and a splash of soda and muddle thoroughly. Remove the fruit remnants. Add Maker's Mark, ice, and top off with soda. Garnish with a fresh orange slice and a maraschino cherry.
The Perfect Manhattan
1 1/2 parts bourbon, such as Maker’s Mark
1/2 parts Sweet Vermouth
1 teaspoon Maraschino Cherry Juice
Maraschino Cherries
1. Shake all together for 30 seconds. Strain into chilled Manhattan glass. Garnish with a maraschino cherry (served up, no ice).
Sterling Cooper Collins
2 ounces organic vodka, such as Kanon
4 ounces tonic water
.5 ounce fresh lemon luice
.5 ounce fresh lime juice
.5 ounce simple syrup
3 maraschino Cherries
Place all ingredients except the tonic water and one cherry into a shaker glass with ice. Make sure to shake vigorously as the ice will muddle the cherries. Then pour all ingredients into a high ball glass, top with tonic water and garnish with the remaining cherry.
