Barry Sanders, the great running back of Oklahoma State University and the Detroit Lions, scored many touchdowns in his career. After each one, he trotted over to the official, handed him the ball and then trotted to the sideline.
There were no dances, no showboating. He always figured that it was his job to score touchdowns. He did it enough that it was routine. No need to gloat.
Sanders came to mind during the kerfuffle over whether President Obama should release the death photos of Osama bin Laden. The president announced Wednesday that he would not release the photos.
I’m glad. There are many reasons not to release the photos, including the fact that doing so is morbid and that it would have only inflamed an already angry network of terrorists hellbent on avenging bin Laden’s death.
There also is the problem that the doubters who are screaming to see the photos will not be appeased. It was a no-win decision for Obama. If he released the photos, the doubting mob would likely claimed that the photos were doctored. By not releasing the photos, those same doubters will claim that the truth is being covered up.
Neither DNA testing, the word of bin Laden’s daughter or eyewitness accounts by the SEALs and doctors who viewed the body will change their minds. Like those who refuse to accept the fact that Obama is a U.S. citizen despite the evidence or those who still believe that President George W. Bush orchestrated the attacks of 9/11, evidence doesn’t matter.
Obama could haul bin Laden’s body around personally and show it to anyone who cared to look at it and it still wouldn’t be proof enough for the doubters.
Which brings us back to Barry Sanders: A team of highly trained Navy SEALs did its job. America did what it was supposed to do.
There is no need to brag or rub someone’s nose in it. Let’s just trot to the sideline and get ready for the next touchdown.
