Tulsa didn’t play very well at UAB but won.
In Conference USA, where wins have been few and far between for most of the teams, the Golden Hurricane probably remains the favorite in the league race.
However, Tulsa is not good enough to just roll it out there and think it is going to win. The Golden Hurricane, especially on the road, needs to play at a high level.
Tulsa faces what is probably its toughest game since the road loss at Iowa State when it goes to Marshall this week.
The Thundering Herd is just 2-3 and is coming off a 51-41 loss at Purdue.
However, Marshall, a 54-31 winner at Rice two weeks ago, looks to be pretty good on offense.
Most importantly, as Tulsa coach Bill Blakenship said this week, “it is in Huntington.”
Good teams win on the road. Even if it isn’t pretty, and the victory at UAB was very ugly, the Hurricane still get credit for a victory.
Conference USA does not have a team likely to threaten the top 25 this year. Tulsa still appears to be the team to beat.
But, Tulsa has been inconsistent on offense. It went from a fabulous defensive game against Fresno State to giving up 42 points to UAB.
In other words, Tulsa needs to play well at Marshall to stay on top of the Conference USA standings.
If the Golden Hurricane can be more consistent, and play at a high level for the majority of the rest of the season, Tulsa still has a chance at a memorable year.
“They definitely deserve what everyone is saying about them,” said Marshall coach Doc Holliday.
We’ll see if we’re still saying those things next week.
