Saturday’s game at Alabama-Birmingham was all business for Tulsa.
The Golden Hurricane is bigger, faster and stronger. So, winning was a matter of performance.
Play well, get the victory and get home.
It didn’t go that way. Sometimes you have to work at it longer and it is more difficult.
In the end, Tulsa had to go back to a familiar script that included playing strong defense and pounding out yards with a tough running game.
Tulsa won 49-42 by getting a turnover that was turned into a touchdown in the final five minutes against UAB.
The Blazers have not won a game this season. However, they were close at Ohio State and even closer with Tulsa.
Tulsa won and remains the favorite in Conference USA.
The Golden Hurricane is 4-1, 2-0 in C-USA.
Tulsa coach Bill Blakenship hopes the Golden Hurricane learned its lesson about life on the road. To win on the road, even against a team you should beat, you need to play your best.
Tulsa did not play its best, or anything close to it, against UAB. However, it won because it did what it does best. TU rammed the ball right down the throat of UAB late in this game.
Now, Tulsa will have to play better. TU is back on the road next week to play Marshall, who should be a bigger challenge than UAB.
Then, it is home for a short week before a Thursday night game with UTEP followed by Rice.
Thanks to the rescue of the game at UAB, there’s no reason to doubt that Tulsa should get out to a 5-0 start in the league. IT will be favored in its next three games.
Then, we’ll see what happens in November.
But, none of this would still be possible if Tulsa had not salvaged what looked like might be an upset at UAB.
