A nice trophy to add to the collection. Thanks, Newsies.

Thank you to the voters who helped the Tulsa World win at last night's Newsies.

The awards are sponsored by the Tulsa Press Club and allowed the public to vote for their favorite local print, TV, radio and web journalists, and help generate scholarship funds for Oklahoma journalism and communication students.

Nearly 5,000 votes were cast.

The Tulsa World and its staff came away with three awards: Jimmie Tramel for Favorite Print Sports Reporter, Jason Ashley Wright for Favorite Print Columnist and the Tulsa World staff for Best Use of Multimedia.

Check out Jimmie's blog Games People Play and Jason's blog Inalienable Wright. If you haven't read Jimmie's national-award winning story on OSU women's basketball coach Jim Littell, you need to. The headline? "Before taking the OSU job, Littell had to get one person's blessing."

As for multimedia, here are some recent examples that I think help us separate from the pack:

Celebrating Woody Guthrie

Driven: Highlighting some of Tulsa's most motivated residents

Becoming Katie: Katie Hill wasn't born a girl

The Questions That Remain: A conversation about Tulsa's Race Riot and racism today

Here are links to learn more about the other Tulsa World staff members who were nominees:

Cary Aspinwall (Favorite Reporter): She just won an national award for her stories on prescription drug abuse in Oklahoma following the death of Sooners linebacker Austin Box.

Kim Brown (Favorite Feature Writer and Favorite Blogger): Her POP blog covers all things pop culture.

Jennifer Chancellor (Favorite Blogger): She's behind Barrelhouse Beat, her long-running music blog.

Tom Gilbert (Favorite Photographer): The chief photographer blogs at View and check out his portfolio.

Kelly Hines (Favorite Sports Reporter): She writes for the high schools sports blog and is one of our rising stars. She recently wrote about the Vian girls basketball team winning the day after a senior starter died unexpectedly.

John Hoover (Favorite Sports Reporter): The veteran OU football beat reporter won national awards in both explanatory writing and beat reporting. His explanatory story was a breakdown of the money behind conference realignment. His beat reporting award was given for a portfolio of stories that included his interview with Texas athletic director DeLoss Dodds and his feature on Oklahoma walk-on running back Dominique Whaley.

PJ Lassek (Favorite Reporter): Our veteran city hall reporter is really amazing at how she gets the story. She is so well connected. She and Brian Barber were all over the long-running trash debate.

Michael Overall (Favorite Feature Writer): He recently looked at the issue of human-trafficking at a former Tulsa businessand this incredible narrative from the Joplin tornado that received national acclaim.

Mike Simons (Favorite Photographer): He blogs at View and check out his portfolio. Mike is the one fueling the Driven project.

James D. Watts Jr. (Favorite Feature Writer): His blogs is ARTS and he just filed a great story on Woody Guthrie for our Guthrie website.

The Tulsa Press Club, which counts me as a member, is a great organization that funds some much needed scholarships for those who want to enter the field journalism. Learn more about the club at www.tulsapressclub.com.
