Citrusy, summery sauvignon blancs were featured in the August issue of Consumer Reports magazine in an article titled "Six summer wines to savor."
Five of the six -- Kim Crawford, Cloudy Bay, Kono, Matua and Cupcake -- are widely available in area liquor stores. Mud House is the only one not found in Oklahoma.
Sauvignon blancs are one of the best choices to pair with salads, light fish dishes, grilled shrimp, sushi and cheeses. They often have flavors of pineapple, citrus, herbs, grass, melons and gooseberries, along with a firm balancing acidity. These wines can tighten your jaw on first sip, like biting into a lemon or lime.
According to the Kono website, in California it was available exclusively at Trader Joe's stores. I don't know if that still is the case, but nevertheless, it recently arrived in Oklahoma. When I tried it, this white wine from Marlborough, New Zealand, delivered a burst of citrusy fruit flavors and a crisp, acidy finish. I loved it.
Most of the better sauvignon blancs will be priced about $15, give or take a few bucks.
Other white wines to consider in hot summer months, according to Consumer Reports, are Kendall-Jackson Vintner's Reserve chardonnay, Cavit pinot grigio and Fetzer Vineyards Valley Oaks riesling. Each of those is common in Tulsa, as well.
