Landry Jones will lead the Sooners in the Sept. 1 season opener at UTEP
Oklahoma now shifts its concentration to UTEP, the season-opening opponent, now that fall camp has been completed.
The Miners defensive coordinator Andre Patterson has spent time this summer dissecting OU’s offense, in particular quarterback Landry Jones.
Patterson, who has been trying to devise a scheme to slow down the Sooners, has been impressed with film of Jones.
“He’s legit,” Patterson concluded in an interview during Conference USA Media Day in Dallas. “I know everyone is saying (Matt) Barkley is the No. 1 quarterback in the country, but I think at the end of the season you are going to have the same battle between (Jones) and Barkley as you had with (Andrew) Luck and (Robert) Griffin last year.”
Patterson agrees with many that Jones’ future won’t stop with Saturday football games.
“He can make all the throws that an NFL quarterback can make,” said Patterson, entering his third year as UTEP’s defensive coordinator. “He’s poised in the pocket and you can tell he’s been coached well.
“I think he has a chance to be a special, special elite NFL quarterback and he poses a serious challenge for me and my players.”
