In this AP photo by Francisco Negroni, volcanic lightning on June 5 over the Puyehue volcano, which is more than 500 miles south of Santiago, Chile. According to the Associated Press, ash from the eruption spread across the Pacific, suspending flights in Australia and New Zealand. Here in another AP photo by Francisco Negroni, this one from June 6, the volcano is calm two days after the eruption. About 4,000 Chileans have been evacuated as of Sunday since the volcano began erupting June 4, the Associated Press reports.
Chile has more than 3,000 volcanoes along its Andean spine, and 500 of these are considered geologically active. About 60 of these have erupted in the past 450 years, according to the Associated Press.
