The Spaghetti Warehouse at 221 E. Brady St. Tulsa World file
While researching material about Tulsa's 20-year-old Spaghetti Warehouse, 221 E. Brady St., which I reviewed Thursday, I ran across some trivia about the first restaurant to take the plunge into the Brady District in near north downtown.
First, the restaurant isn't located where it originally was going to be.
Spaghetti Warehouse had paid $345,000 in 1990 for the old Crane Supply Co. at 623 E. Third St. (Small world: I made pickups and deliveries to Crane Supply when I worked for another plumbing supply firm when I was in college.)
Before remodeling began, the building was destroyed by fire, which was ruled an arson. Spaghetti Warehouse said it was insured for what it paid for the building.
In 1991, the company made a deal for its current location, the former Vinson Supply Co., which opened in June 1992.
Former University of Tulsa basketball coach Tubby Smith was a celebrity server on a special opening day that benefited the Tulsa Community Food Bank. The event drew 2,348 people.
The next night, the official opening night, the 430-seat restaurant drew about 1,500 customers, many of whom waited at least an hour for a seat.
